BP Logistics Makes Large-scale Roll-out a Success

Following the successful trial of a Rainkine Thompson Ltd (RTL) telematics system on 15 petrol tanker vehicles recently, BP Logistics decided further roll-out of the system was justified and implemented its deployment accordingly.

The telematics system provides detailed reports on driver and vehicle safety and efficiency. The initial trial resulted in a 3% improvement in fleet efficiency, largely through the identification of driver performance initiatives as part of an associated driver development programme.

As a result of the success of the initial trial, a business case was formulated by Jeff Baxter, BP Logistics’ Fleet Development Engineer, to roll the telematics solution out to the rest of the fleet.

The telematics system was found to be suitable for the whole fleet of 250 petrol tankers and was progressively rolled out over a 12-month period.

The roll-out required careful management to ensure maximum vehicle availability at all times.

Baxter says: “The RTL telematics system has added real efficiency improvements to our nationwide fleet by providing accurate feedback on individual vehicle performance, based on driver style. The information has proved invaluable in further developing our drivers into highly accomplished, fuel-efficient drivers, reducing our overall fuel consumption and helping to reduce costs.”
